Did you know that Twitter has scrapped the 140 character limits for direct messages?

Yes, it’s true. Now you don’t have to worry about that 140 character limits when sending direct messages using Twitter.

Twitter recently announced that character limit on direct messages is increased from 140 characters to 10k. This means, now you can write 72 times longer direct messages on Twitter which makes it useful for communicating almost anything.

This also means that Twitter can now replace Facebook Messenger and even WhatsApp. We’re not saying that this is going to but just a thought.

Twitter has started rolling out this new limit and soon it will be available into all countries. However, the 140 character limit remains as it is for the public tweets.

With these recent move, it is clear that Twitter is trying to take on popular chat apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp while retaining its core strength through public message streaming.

Direct messages are now around for a while, but uptake has remained low which is why probably Twitter is introducing multiple changes and improvements to it. The latest improvement to direct messages includes the ability to send other tweets, web links, emoticons, videos and even group chats. These features were ignored initially due to absence of ads and now it’s a totally different game with ads in place, Wall Street Journal reports.

In conclusion, the recent changes have surely increased the use of direct messaging on Twitter. However, only time will tell if it has potential to threaten other popular services like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.
