Island Craft, Rarotonga

About Island Craft
Island Craft is one of the oldest businesses in the Cook Islands, established in 1943 and now run by the fourth generation of the same family. From its flagship store in downtown Avarua and a second outlet at Rarotonga International Airport, the team has spent more than 80 years championing authentic Cook Islands craftsmanship. The business also operates Perfumes of Rarotonga and a long-standing florist service, part of the Interflora network for around 45 years, offering locally made wooden carvings, shell craft, black pearl jewellery, ukuleles, coconut soaps, essential oils, fresh flowers, and the iconic 21st keys. Customers shop in store, online, and from overseas, with deliveries across Rarotonga, the Pa Enua, and internationally.

The Challenge
Running multiple stores across Rarotonga meant the team needed a single system to manage stock, suppliers, and registers across every location. Their previous point of sale was tied to an on-site server that held the entire database. Setting it up took a long time, and the system caused ongoing problems day to day. As the business expanded across retail, florals, and perfumes, the team needed something faster, more reliable, and built for the way they actually work — across stores, categories, and customers shopping both on the island and from overseas.
“Hike gives me real-time information and helps with the day-to-day planning of our business.”

How Hike Helped
A cloud-based system that connects every store and keeps day-to-day operations running smoothly. As Managing Director Fletcher Melvin notes, Hike gives him real-time information and helps with the day-to-day planning of the business.
- Cloud-based access makes information available instantly across every store, with no on-site server to slow things down.
- Real-time business visibility makes day-to-day planning faster and more informed.
- Stock and suppliers in one place keeps inventory, suppliers, and registers organised across both outlets.
- End-to-end order tracking follows customer orders and payments from sale through to fulfilment.
- Easy for the whole team to learn and quick to use, even during busy periods.
- Fast and responsive compared to the team's previous POS, keeping checkout smooth.
The Results
Today, Island Craft runs every store on one connected cloud platform. The team has real-time visibility into sales, stock, and customer orders, and the slow setups and reliability issues of the old server-based system are behind them. With Hike handling the day-to-day, Fletcher and the team can stay focused on what they do best — keeping Cook Islands arts, crafts, and culture at the heart of every customer experience, both on the island and around the world.
